WEEKLY SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES

Language

Add some labels around your house! Find some paper, tape, and a pencil. Walk around the house or your bedroom adding labels to different objects.

In the classroom, students are encouraged to use their letter sounds to sound out their writing. Some may have one letter as their label, like "t" for table, some might have "tbl", and so on. In Kindergarten we are trying to build independent writers and focus on letter sounds, so spelling and specific phonics rules are not a focus.

Math:

SPLAT is a game that all my classes are familiar with. They might even be able to teach you! To begin, take a piece of paper and cut out a cloud shape. You will also need to gather a set of counters. Since you will be learning from home for a while, I would suggest finding some you can use for counting over and over. You want to find counters that are all the same shape and colour. Some ideas are: dried beans, small pebbles, beads, circles cut from paper, or anything similar that you can find in your home.

          1. Decide how many counters to use. I suggest starting with 5 and going up from there.

          2. Have your student close their eyes, and you will hide some of the counters under the "splat" paper. Say you hide 2.

          3. When the student opens their eyes, they must count the visible counters (1, 2, 3), and then figure out how many are hiding.

          4. Lift the SPLAT and say with the student, "2 and 3 make 5".

          5. Switch roles and play again!
